There's nothing in the world like having a puppy in your household. Their high-pitched barks can either tug at your heart or you can't wait until your dog grows into a deeper voice. We love their innocence and they can open our hearts by their cute antics.

Unlike an adult dog, a puppy cannot eat table scraps and they should not consume any human food during the first year. Not only are their teeth not strong enough, but their stomach cannot digest food the same as an older dog. Puppies also need vitamins and fats that may not be found in adult dog food. Though some commercially manufactured puppy food makers claim their product has the nutrients necessary for optimum health, often this is not the case.

Puppies need a diet that is strong in natural food and ingredients that are not over-processed. Manufactured puppy food has also been known to contain pesticides, preservatives, low grade meats and proteins and in recent years, have been subject to recall. There was a lot in the news over the past years about pet foods being recalled.

If you're thinking about whether an organic diet is best for your puppy, it has been proven that manufactured puppy food may contain additives, genetically modified materials and lacks antioxidants. Antioxidants are important in fighting against free radicals, which are caused by pollutants and can be found in certain forms of cancer, cataracts as well as heart and lung disorders.

Antioxidants can be found in most vegetables and fruit. Good sources of antioxidants are dark, green leafy vegetables such as kale greens and spinach. Also, orange-colored produce like bell peppers, yams and potatoes are also good sources of nutrients.

Talk to a veterinarian about choices in a puppy's diet and they can recommend and what are natural foods to keep your puppy healthy and promote growth.
