Indoor Kennel or Crate

There are some great advantages if you buy an indoor kennel for your new puppy. It's collapsible and easy to move around the house. You can also stow it in the car when visiting friends or relations so that pup can come along too. The indoor kennel becomes the puppies' own special retreat where he can be safely be left alone for a few hours if your too busy to keep an eye on him. If he frets a lot at night soon after he arrives, you can move his indoor kennel upstairs into your bedroom to sleep near you and then move it back downstairs in the morning to the same place each time. After a while, just leave his indoor kennel in the usual spot one night and he will sleep quite happily on his own.

Collar and Lead

These are two important pieces of equipment but in the beginning there's no need to buy anything too expensive for your puppy because he will grow out of a collar quite quickly. Buy something which is a basic straightforward nylon or soft leather collar and a lead about 1 meter long which is the right length for convenience. A choke or check chain is too harsh on a puppies' sensitive neck and it's easy to cause an injury even if you are being careful so do not use them on young dogs.

Toys

There are so many dog toys to choose from but whichever one you give to your pup make sure that's one of his special playthings. Make sure he cannot reach other things such as shoes and slippers which your pup would like as toys. If you do find him chewing something he should not, then swap it for one of his toys but don't make a big fuss and get cross otherwise he might learn to do it when you're not looking!

Food Dishes

There plenty of good quality food and water dishes of different sizes that you can buy for your pup. It's a good idea to start your pup off with an old plate or soup bowl for a few months until he gets near his full size. After that you can buy him a good pair of stainless steel food and water dishes meant for an adult dog. You could buy puppy dishes but he will soon outgrow them.

Dog Blanket

You can buy your puppy a special dog blanket that keeps him warm will help dry him out when he gets wet. But often an old blanket you have at home will keep him nice and snug. One great tip to help your pup adapt to his new home with you is to take his blanket along with you when you go to collect him from the breeders and put it in with his mother and siblings for a while. His dog blanket will get plenty of scent on it from his mother and littermates which will calm him down at night when he is wrapped in his blanket.

Dog Chews

A pup likes nothing better than to chew something and giving him a dog chew is a good way of occupying his attention whenever he must be left on his own. There are lots of chews you can buy of various types, but just buy a selection of chews to start with to see which sort he likes best.

Well, we've listed 6 of the essential things for you new pup, but there are lots of other dog supplies and equipment that are not quite so essential for your new puppy.
