Many dog owners never realize that a dog lead is an important part of dog ownership. For them a lead is a lead and one is just as good as any other. But use the wrong lead and you may end up with regrets that you own a dog, no matter how you love them. A lead can tire you when you are walking the dog, or it can make both of you enjoy the promenading. It is a matter of knowing which lead is most appropriate for your dog and your needs.
However, there are hundreds of styles and makes and characteristics of dog leads in the market that it is quite impossible to name and compare all of them. Therefore to simplify matters and yet give you the leeway of selecting your own lead, we enumerate below some kinds of lead and their main qualities, and thus to which dog they are best used with.
Simple leads. A simple length of woven synthetic or natural material with a clip at the end for attaching to the dog's collar. Least expensive but often abrades the animal's skin.
Retractable leads. As its name indicates, the lead shortens automatically when there is slack, and extends to a certain length when pulled out. Good in preventing the dog from tripping on the leash and giving him some freedom to move, but may not control larger dogs. Cheaper retractables may break easily. Keep locked to a shorter length when among many people or in public areas such as shops and crowded streets.
Slip leads. Made with a loop at the dog end that can be tightened or loosened as necessary via a mechanism. Mostly used for training dogs; usually not appropriate for ordinary use.
Bungee leads. Those that 'extend' on pressure and returns rubber-like when slack is given. It enables a frisky dog to move without giving too much pressure on the owner's arm or hand. Best used for small active dogs but be sure to use the most appropriate for the dog's size. Too large and it will be heavy on him; too small and he may break it.
Leather leads. Best all-around lead for strength, ease of use and weight.
So make your selection on which is best for your canine pet, considering its size, breed, and what you usually do when you put him on a lead. You can always buy another if you don't like the first choice.
